Say Goodbye to Orkut – Life Span of An Era Reaches The End
Remember Orkut?
Yes, that first social networking website most of us signed up on! It was colorful, it was fun, it was exciting, it was one of a kind, and it’s coming to an END! People never really knew what social networking was or about until, Orkut happened. But sadly, today it’s not even listed amongst platforms that came after it.
Orkut was the first social platform to give most people an opportunity of tracking down lost old friends; and some even got their first love through it in a “no-smartphone-era”. An achievement or not, but Orkut did manage to make a special place in our hearts effortlessly with its vibrant and colorful themes, testimonials, community discussions, and invites from people around the world.
Set up in the year 2004 by Google, the site is announced being shut down on the 30th of September this year. Reportedly, the reason behind bidding adieu to Orkut is said to be the less traffic it has been receiving since Facebook’s establishment. Hence, authorities from Google wanted to redirect their energy, focus, and resources over to its other social networking platforms and services.
On behalf of the entire Google authorities, Engineering Director, Paulo Golgher quoted the following statement in a Bloggers blog written by him;
“It’s been a great 10 years, and we apologize to those still actively using the service. We hope people will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond.”
Though bloggers from around the world are racing to bring out the news to people in the most interesting manner by using elements like polls on their blog; the statement by Golgher is being used by some to crack jokes or mark sarcasm on end of an era; Orkut. Nevertheless many people are still seen narrating stories and incidents of their lives through other mediums revealing the memories they will forever share with the social network soon coming to an end.
However, it’s just the service that has come to an end and not the memories. Google is offering people having Orkut accounts with an opportunity to either export their profile data to Google+ or save it down in their computers using Google Takeout.
Ironically, back in the times of Orkut, using social network was fun and a time of the day to relax. However, now the meaning has harshly changed to having a status symbol and reflecting a happening lifestyle even though you don’t have one!
Nevertheless, the decision has been made and will be implemented anyhow on the judgment day of September 30, 2014. Most social media experts in fact came up with statements quoting that this end should have come way back, which is quite logical to say as its charm had already been lost after Facebook shot to fame. Hence, continuing the service with the same focused input was a waste of the resources and energy of a firm like Google!
