PST to MBOX Migration: Overcoming the Hurdles Successfully
We are gifted with technologies that has helped to simplify various challenges of day to day to life. And between this, the best part is there are some small things that have proved essentially important. For example: Saving the files with different extensions so that it is easy for the end user to determine its compatible application.
But, on one end where this technique gave a lot of advantages, it had some drawbacks too. For example: Data from a similar application could not be imported into another application. Say, the emails saved into PST in Outlook cannot be opened in any other mail client. Although the data in files is same, but just for the fact that file formats are different, their transfer into different application would be restricted.
Understanding through Scenario:
Suppose, for some reason there is need to switch mail client from PST to MBOX Migration. Now, when there is requirement to migrate the emails from one application to another, the biggest challenge faced here would be conflicts in the type of files. While the emails in Outlook gets saved into .pst file, Thunderbird stores emails into .mbox files.
In such a case, data migration could be made possible only when the emails in PST is saved into MBOX file and then that MBOX can be imported to Thunderbird. And this is possible only if the PST is converted into MBOX file format.
But, that is not alone the challenge that users are facing while migrating email data from one mail client to another. Below mentioned are some of the limitations that users confront while moving database between varied platforms:
#: Large Size of Data Files
Larger is the data, more is the time taken in its data transmission. If the database size is huge, it might make the migration process complex, in terms of time, accuracy, and risk of migration failure.
#: Export Data with Metadata
An email is made up of various components. Its metadata includes the info about sender, receiver, date/time of transmission, attachments etc. Therefore, it is the concern of the user that while data is migrated, its metadata should be retained.
#: Source File has Password
If the file from which database has to be migrated is encrypted or password protected, it can cause trouble while data migration. If the PST file has password, migration can successfully take place if some PST Password Remover program is deployed to make the file contents readable.
With a proper solution for data migration, all these challenges can be overcome. In addition to this, it is important that all requisites for data migration are known so that selection of solution for precise migration is fulfilled.
