Let Us Get Started

Step 1: Create a new Gmail account and configure the account with the Lotus Notes installed on your system.

Why IMAP Email Account

IMAP is an email service that will facilitate users to access the mailbox of Gmail from different computers situated in various locations. It will allow users to download only the headers of the messages and then it will ask for user consent if they wish to download the body of the message and their corresponding attachments. Unlike POP, that creates the local copies of the emails and then deletes the original email messages from the server.

For activating IMAP access to the newly created Gmail, follow the steps given below

  • Click on the Gear icon Provided on the main page of the Gmail interface and then select the option Settings
  • Move to the section Forwarding POP/IMAP
  • Under the section of IMAP Access, simply enable the radio button Enable Button
  • Then click on Save changes present at the bottom of page

Just as an email message of Notes resides full time on the Domino Server. An IMAP mail resides full time on the IMAP server.

When you select for the IMAP account, Notes creates a temporary database. It stores all the message headers and bodies of messages. However, it deletes them once a user ends the session with the IMAP server.

Step 2: You will notice that all the emails from Gmail will get downloaded to the Inbox of Lotus Notes. All the messages of Gmail will get reflected in the Lotus Notes inbox.

Step 3: Now open the username.nsf file in Lotus Notes on your system. Copy all the emails from it and paste one buy one in the archived folder of the IMAP configured account of Gmail.

The username.nsf file over here contains all the email messages of a user. It includes messages from inbox, outboxes, sent items and the archive folders of Lotus Notes.

Step 4: All the emails will be automatically uploaded to your Gmail account with the synchronization process and you will be able to view the emails on the Gmail. All your email messages will be replicated over to your Gmail account.

Conclusion

The above method gives a complete idea about how to transfer Lotus Notes email messages to a web based email service like Gmail. Moreover, this method does not help you to move the contacts file of Notes to Gmail. In such type of situations, you can depend on a utility known as Lotus Notes Contacts to Gmail Converter
